Well, I put my website url in search box and then search. If it is published, it will appear on search result. Otherwise i will check on my mail because directory sites send the confirmation mail after submitting the site.

What I know that robots crawl websites. And there are webmaster tools where you put a piece of code and they start to index your website. But the problem with this is you have to put each search engine's code to your website header which can make it heavy. Do you know of any way where a piece of code can send your website listing to all major search engines?

Web directories are no more important as Google considers them as 'thin' sites with very less content. Hence submitting your website to directories is not helpful to rank keywords in Google.

Usually most of the web directories which accept link submission freely are of poor quality and they are full of spam, so it is not recommended in modern times to submit website in directories, just submit the site in search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing etc.
